The Complete Guide to Fiscal Sponsorship
Everything ministry leaders need to know about fiscal sponsorship — what it is, how it works, and how InFocus Ministries helps 30+ organizations focus on mission instead of administration.
What Is Fiscal Sponsorship?
Fiscal sponsorship is a formal arrangement where an established 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization extends its tax-exempt status and administrative infrastructure to a ministry, project, or cause that has not yet (or chooses not to) incorporate as its own nonprofit.
In plain terms: you get to operate your ministry, accept tax-deductible donations, and serve your community — while your fiscal sponsor handles the legal compliance, financial management, and IRS reporting behind the scenes.
The arrangement is recognized by the IRS and is used by thousands of organizations across the United States. It is especially valuable for ministry leaders who want to focus on their calling rather than navigating the complexities of nonprofit administration.
How InFocus Ministries Works as a Fiscal Sponsor
InFocus Ministries operates as a Model A (Direct Project) fiscal sponsor. This is the most common and comprehensive type of fiscal sponsorship, where your ministry operates as a project under the InFocus umbrella.
Under Model A, InFocus holds legal and fiduciary responsibility for your ministry's finances. Donations are made to InFocus Ministries and designated for your specific project. We provide the administrative infrastructure — bookkeeping, fund accounting, donor receipting, insurance, compliance, and technology — while you retain full autonomy over your ministry vision and programs.
InFocus was established in 2003 and is based in Mount Vernon, Washington. Today we support 30+ ministries serving communities across the United States and in five countries, including Uganda, Nepal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Who Is Fiscal Sponsorship Right For?
Fiscal sponsorship is ideal for ministry leaders and community organizers who want to focus on impact rather than administration. InFocus has worked with ministries at every stage — from brand-new ideas to established programs with decades of history.
New Ministry Leaders
You have a calling and a vision but don't want to spend months on IRS paperwork and startup costs. Fiscal sponsorship lets you start serving immediately.
Church Planters & Missionaries
You need to raise tax-deductible support quickly. Operating under an established 501(c)(3) gives donors confidence and gets you funded faster.
Community Outreach Projects
Your project serves the community but isn't large enough to justify the overhead of its own nonprofit. InFocus gives you the structure without the burden.
International Ministries
You're doing work overseas and need a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) to receive donations. InFocus sponsors ministries serving in Uganda, Nepal, the DRC, Mexico, and more.
Established Ministries
You've been operating independently and want to reduce administrative overhead by joining a group that shares resources, insurance, and technology.
Short-Term or Seasonal Projects
Your ministry is focused on a specific campaign, event, or time-bound initiative. Fiscal sponsorship gives you nonprofit infrastructure without a permanent commitment.

What is fiscal sponsorship?
Fiscal sponsorship is a formal arrangement where an established 501(c)(3) nonprofit (the sponsor) provides its tax-exempt status and administrative infrastructure to a project or ministry that does not have its own nonprofit status. The sponsor handles legal compliance, financial management, and IRS reporting while the ministry focuses on its mission.
What is a Model A fiscal sponsor?
Model A (also called "Direct Project" or "Comprehensive") is the most common type of fiscal sponsorship. Under Model A, your ministry operates as a project of the sponsor organization. The sponsor has legal and fiduciary responsibility, accepts donations on your behalf, and manages the financial administration. InFocus Ministries operates as a Model A fiscal sponsor.
How is fiscal sponsorship different from starting my own 501(c)(3)?
Starting your own 501(c)(3) requires incorporating in your state, applying to the IRS (Form 1023), waiting 3-12 months for approval, setting up your own accounting, insurance, and compliance systems, and managing all governance independently. Fiscal sponsorship lets you start operating and accepting tax-deductible donations immediately, with all of that infrastructure already in place.
Can I accept tax-deductible donations under a fiscal sponsor?
Yes. When you operate under a fiscal sponsor like InFocus Ministries, donations to your ministry are made to InFocus (the 501(c)(3)) and designated for your specific project. Donors receive tax-deductible receipts, and you get the full benefit of established nonprofit status.
How much does fiscal sponsorship cost with InFocus?
InFocus Ministries retains 7.5% of donations to cover administrative costs including bookkeeping, IRS reporting, website hosting, insurance, and nonprofit technology. This is well within the typical range of 5-15% charged by fiscal sponsors nationally, and significantly less than the cost of operating your own independent nonprofit.
Is my ministry too small for fiscal sponsorship?
No. InFocus does not have a minimum size requirement. We welcome small startup ministries that are just getting off the ground. You will need at least three Advisory Committee members who are committed to helping guide the ministry.
Will I be locked into a contract?
No. Plans change, and we understand that. Some ministries are short-term, and others grow to the point where they form their own independent 501(c)(3). At InFocus, we celebrate that growth as a win for our ministry partners.
Can I eventually leave and start my own 501(c)(3)?
Absolutely. Many ministries use fiscal sponsorship as a launch pad. When you are ready to file for your own tax-exempt status, we support the transition and celebrate the milestone. InFocus exists to help ministries succeed — whether that means staying with us long-term or growing into independence.
